Maybach Motorenbau began commercial life as an offshoot of the Zeppelin company and as you might expect built engines for their parent company. They subsequently built aircraft engines, large diesels for marine and rail use and luxury cars which is where we come in.

Up to the beginning of WW2 Maybach made around 1,800 luxury cars, aimed at what nowadays be called the super rich. During the war they switched to tank engines and never returned to car making. After the end of the war they concentrated on large engines for off road use, were bought by Daimler Benz and became MTU. After various financial dealings involving spin off and repurchase by Daimler they are now wholly owned by Rolls Royce plc, a company who don’t make the cars of that name (yes, big business can be complicated).

Mercedes retain the Maybach name and in the late 00s got the idea of reintroducing Maybach as a super luxury marque aimed at the likes of Rolls and Bentley. In the event the new Maybachs, essentially rebodied S Class Mercs, didn’t take off and the current plan is just to use Maybach as a model name for upmarket S Classes.

Somewhat unexpectedly the resurrection of the brand name brought new interest and large prices to the pre war cars which are now being auctioned for seven figure sums.

So, what did they make? Very large, opulent and expensive models is the answer.

Have a DS7. No, it’s nothing like a Citroen. The name is derived from Doppel Sechs 7 Liter, or Double Six 7 litre. Like UK Daimlers with a similar name, it was a V12.

Not enough for you? Have a DS8 which is powered as you might expect. It was known as the Doppelganger (double geared) because of its availability with a four speed plus overdrive vacuum operated preselector gearbox, giving eight speeds. Want to buy one? Raid the piggy bank. One sold for €1.3m (more than ten times its estimate) in 2012 and there’s another sale coming up in !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . You’ll need a lot more than €1.3m this time though.
